Fashion of course is all about clothes, bags, shoes, accessories, and everything that is wearable and fashionable. But what if those clothes are worn by the opposite gender? Is it still fashion?
Well, for many, cross dressing is yet another branch that stemmed from the tree of fashion world. And for these people, it has got nothing to do with homosexuality or lesbianism, although some cross dressers are.
Therefore, it is to be understood that there are also many ways of cross dressing. Just as in the catwalk there are night gowns, cocktail wears, corporate clothes and couture, so are there drag queens, drag kings, and underdressers in cross dressing.
And just in case you are new to those terms, then here are their distinguishing characteristics that makes unique from one another.
Drag Queens
These are perhaps the most popular of all, and thus the undisputed celebrity of cross dressing. A drag queen is a man who chose the woman's wardrobe for his style. But he does so with more flair and explosiveness than usual.
If you think this is just a run-in-the-mill portrayal of femininity by a man, then you are wrong! A drag queen does things with exaggeration in mind. The feminine features in this case are taken to heights that almost make it comical and hilarious. This usually includes heavy makeup, excessive accessories, outrageous hairstyle, sexy clothes, and strongly feminine mannerisms.
Drag Kings
These are female cross dressers that portray very strong masculine features, also with exaggeration in mind. Like the drag queen, drag kings are also often used in movies and theatres for a hilarious appearance.
However, drag kings are generally not as popular or as hilarious as drag queens can be. This is majorly because cross dressing is considered to be far more bizarre and unusual in men than in women.
Underdressers
These are the closet queens of cross dressing. In this case, the person may still be sporting clothes that are normal and acceptable of his/her gender, but underneath those clothes, he/she is actually wearing underwear of the opposite gender.
Like for example, an underdressing man may be wearing masculine clothes, but beneath those, he would be wearing female's underwear.
